Bahamian Adventures: Week 1 Recap
Anthony S. · Student Crew
Hello everyone it’s been some time since my previous expedition. I’m so glad to be back and write for you wonderful people. To start off, the week felt short but also long in certain ways. There have been a lot of changes since my last expedition on DTO (Defy The Odds, our smaller vessel we used to sail on). Our new vessel, Whatever It Takes (WIT), has A/C which feels amazing, although it does take a toll on the generators so it can not be on 24/7 and it gets really hot at night which is something I did not have to deal with on DTO, but with some time I should be able to get used to the heat.
Another thing I have to learn to get used to is the new writing format for my blogs, everything is new and different for me and it is not something I’m used to, I won’t be able to write like I used to and it feels really weird for me. School is a really big part of this expedition, and I have 6 classes now. My favorite class out of the six I am taking would be the culinary course because I am somewhat of a baker it’s something I love to do in my free time. The other courses I am taking are narrative writing, ship systems, seamanship & navigation, mental health portfolio, and book club.
We have also been doing a lot of activities and service projects on shore! Some activities we did onshore were going to a sailing center and afterwards we had the instructors and sailing students from there come over for dinner and it was quite a lot of people. We also went on a tour of the Island School. They had lots of cool science equipment and delicious sweet tea made out of fever grass, also called lemon grass. When we volunteered at One Eleuthera Foundation the next day, I noticed they had fever grass growing there too, and they clipped some for us to keep. We went back to the boat and everybody enjoyed some tea. It was even better than what they made at Island School!
Between service projects we also did some fun stuff like cliff jumping at the Blue Hole, which is a big, super deep pool of water in the middle of nowhere. Pretty much everyone jumped. We also explored a cave which was awesome because there were bats!
Now, we’re off to Little San Salvador for more adventures, fun, and classes! Talk to you all soon.
