Supporting Haitian Refugees in the Dominican Republic
Cedar Gardner · Adult Supervisor
As we pull anchor and set sail for Saint Kitts, we reflect on our impactful experiences with the non-profit organization Felices Ahora - Happiness Now.Located in the heart of Santo Domingo, Happiness Now serves a community of Haitian refugees who face dire challenges, often struggling to secure a daily meal.
Many of these individuals spend their days scavenging the city landfill for scraps to sell or use in their makeshift homes, risking their lives amidst frequent trash avalanches. For our students, volunteering with Happiness Now provided a unique opportunity to connect with people from a different culture and language who have experienced profound hardship, and to give back to communities most affected by these conditions. Our students took on significant responsibilities during their service. In the center of the refugee community, they helped construct a protective wall around the safe-haven center.
This community center serves as an educational refuge, offering lessons in math, English, and reading to students who would otherwise have no access to schooling in the Dominican Republic. In addition to their hard work, students had the opportunity to dance, laugh, share stories, and provide meals to many of the young people living in this community. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication over the past few days and are grateful, as always, to help serve with Felices Ahora - Happiness Now.
